Chapter Sixteen

They spent hours exploring each other—kissing and touching one another. As the moonlight streamed through the big picture window in the bedroom, Junior lay beside Ryan, watching him sleep, his face looking years younger in the repose of slumber. He twitched, and Junior thought he was going to wake up, but he merely snorted and rolled over onto his side. Junior stifled a laugh.

“What the fuck are you giggling about?” Ryan’s voice sounded grumpy, but he was fighting a grin, which Junior bent over and kissed.

“You are a very active sleeper.” Junior kept his voice low as he spooned against Ryan’s broad back. He slipped his arms around Ryan’s torso and placed a soft, sweet kiss on the back of his neck. “You don’t stay still.”

Ryan rolled in Junior’s arms, dipping his head under Junior’s chin. “Yeah, I’ve always been that way. I used to fall out of the bed all the time.” He tucked one arm behind his head. “I always had to have the bottom bunk.”

“You had bunk beds?”

Ryan rolled his eyes. “Of course we did. Ashley was the only one with her own room, except my dad, of course. All the boys doubled or tripled up. You don’t get a big house on a cop’s salary.”

Junior nodded. “Essentially the same with us. Mamá had a room, the girls shared a room, and I slept on the pull-out sofa.”

Ryan chuckled. “I can’t imagine growing up with a house full of women. Hell, I can barely imagine living with one woman. I mean, you’ve met Ashley. Even though she was a pageant queen, she’s not the girliest. You grew up with a lot of women in one house.”

Junior laughed and whistled through his teeth. “Mano, you have no fuckin’ idea. Some of my more bigoted relatives said that’s why I am what I am.”

“Why you’re the way you are? What? A soldier? An MMA trainer?”

Junior grinned. “Yeah, exactly.”

Ryan rolled his eyes.

“But you love your family.”

“I do. I’m thankful for what’s left of them, you know? I’m glad Nanda’s here, though. It’s nice having some family nearby.”

Ryan laid his hand on Junior’s cheek, rubbing his thumb over the stubble there. He was quiet, thoughtful, so Junior kept talking.

“Mamá died nine years ago. She had a heart attack. She probably had had several heart attacks, actually, but she ignored how bad she was feeling, and in the end, she wasn’t in any pain.” Junior grinned. “She died on the couch, watching a telenovela, working on her crochet. Not a terrible way to go.”

Ryan exhaled. “No, no, it’s not.” He was thoughtful for a moment. “What about your father?”

“Pop died when I was twelve. Work accident.”

“I’m sorry.”

Junior shrugged. “It’s been a long time.”

“Yeah.”

They lay in the bed for a few long moments, just looking at each other.

Ryan broke the silence. “My mother died when I was barely three. I don’t remember her much.”

“I knew she was deceased, but I didn’t realize you were that young. I’m so sorry, Ryan.”

“Thanks. Cancer can go fuck itself.
